Happy Maki Bento

Happy maki bento with salmon, green beans sautee, and fruit.

This bento is basically left over from last night's dinner except my daughter didn't eat any of it so it's new to her. I made gomoku gohan last night, so used that and made maki this morning. For veggies I sauteed green beans with onions and added soy sauce to taste. I was hesitant to put in salmon since my daughter is at the English school temporarily but added it anyway with some lemon to cut down the smell a bit. Strawberries and blueberries for dessert.

This is my daughter's last day at English school for her trial period to see if she is the right kind of student for their program. It seems it doesn't matter either way since my daughter is just not happy at this institution. She says she prefers the Japanese preschool. Too bad the Japanese preschool doesn't go through kindergarten. We have another interview at the trilingual school in a few months so we will try that. Perhaps she will feel more comfortable there since they focus on Japanese, Chinese, and English.

Bento Request from the Girl

This bento was requested by my daughter of her and her baby brother -- the banzai  baby is wearing an egg diaper. Thought I would mention that since this was my husband's contribution to the bento.

The 2 kids are made of egg, carrots, tomatoes, konbu, and nori. Bento includes shumai underneath the star strawberries, Japanese style sweet beans, chikuwa (fish cake) filled with cheese and cucumber. Should have thought about color scheming a little more in this bento. I think I used too much white with chikuwa and shumai, so I used strawberries to cover the shumai to get rid of all the white. But I'm now thinking I could have used more green or maybe even some yellow for contrast...

Niko Niko Bento

Niko niko bento is what my daughter called it this morning so I am going with that.

Smiling flower onigiri with konbu; cream corn croquette; mini sausage with peas; turnip, cucumber, and radish salad with cream sesame dressing; and finally, strawberries for dessert.

My son and I dropped off my daughter at English school this morning. She will be there for a good 3 hours longer than her Japanese preschool, so it's quite a long day for her.

It's the first day of Spring and the Bay Area is welcoming this day with light showers. It's quite chilly out too. Hope it warms up soon...

Duck Bento

Duck bento with fish fillet, harusame salad and fruit.

The ducks are made of fried egg, sesame seed, and nori. The sun is made of boiled quail egg and radish. Clouds are made of takuwan. Bento also includes fried fish fillet, harusame salad, and apples.

Today was my daughter's last day of preschool before spring break. She starred in a play called "The Big Turnip" and acted out the role of the grandchild. It was a very sweet production and enjoyed by all.

Next week she has an "interview" of sorts at an English school. She will attend for 3 days to see if she is the "right fit" for the school. It boggles my mind that academic competition starts at such a young age. The application process and this interview is reminiscent of college...The girl, however, is very excited at the prospect of finally starting kindergarten at an English school.
