Flower Bento

Mr. Bento Corner here. Sorry we haven't posted in a while. Mrs. Bento Corner needs to rest her blogging muscles for a bit, so posts may be a little scarse for now.

Anyway, the above bento was created a couple weeks ago, I have just been too lazy to post the ingredients for it, so here goes:

Broccoli and seaweed salad
Sausage
Egg with imitation crab
Mashed pumpkin with butter and sugar
Pickled plum rice ball with fish flakes

That's all for now.

Snack Bento

Snack bento includes umeboshi onigiri, cream corn croquette with bacon, kanikama tamagoyaki and strawberry.

So, my husband had to give me a nudge and tell me it's time to post something since it's been so long...

I was kinda hoping maybe he would post again since he got what like, oh, 17 comments (insert wickedly surprised face here)! Not like anyone is counting or anything...I am suggesting that he posts more though since this time of year is hectic with our kids' birthday parties which some how ends up being my (sole) responsibility and other obligatory festvities...

Halloween is a big deal around here since we live across the street from the most famous house in our city. Vans filled with kids get dropped off on our corner and we end up getting slammed each year giving out loads and loads of candy. Last year I believe we went through about 350 pieces of candy...with this many kids we can only afford to give out one candy per kid. I remember last year some kids were coming around twice and towards the end of the night one kid suggested I give him the last of the remaining candy in the bowl because he didn't want us to go through the trouble of getting rid of it ourselves...kids are so thoughtful.

So anyway, my husband has volunteered to do a Halloween Bento...or perhaps another rendition of Cure Blight.

Muwahahahaha!
When the cat's away, the mice will play...yes it's Hubby Bento Day!
[Wait, did I just call myself a mouse?]

Anyway, several months ago, Mrs. Bento Corner decided to run away for a 4 day weekend, leaving me with the kiddos, one of which needed a bento for school. To ensure that no record of that bento would see the light of day, she took our only working digital camera with her.

But she forgot that men are creative, and we can overcome such obsticles. I still had my old digital-8 camcorder in the house, and was able to film a video of my creations, and later retrieve a screen shot. Then I waited, not days, not weeks, but months, until this morning, while she lies sleeping.

I WILL NOT BE DENIED!

So, what kind of bento should I show the world? Not some foo foo girly bento, no, this would have to be a manly bento. And what is more manly than...

Doraemon!

Ok, so he's not that manly. Actually, any kind of cute food preparation is decidedly un-manly, but I digress.

The "bento" is basically a round sandwich. I got it round by giving it a bowl cut. I used the same bowl to shape the ham on the top of the head. The nose is a grape tomato (a very small pear shaped tomato, the pointy end is sticking in the bread), and the face is sliced nori. I forget what was inside the sandwich...some kind of meat. I see a cucumber sticking out, so I must have used one of those too. I am guessing that I put mayonase inside.

Anyway, like America's missle defense system, this bento was a success on many levels, it just failed its primary purpose. It was way too big, leaving no room for anything else in the container, and the nori blew off about 10 seconds after I took the video. Ah well, we live and learn. I ended up having to make a backup bento in the 15 minutes or so I had left before I had to get the girl into the car for school. Here is what I ended up with.

Ok, same basic ingredients in the sandwhich (meat, cucumber, mayo), this time cut into much smaller fish shapes. Included some assorted fruit and leftover cucumber salad.

That's all for now. Beware wifey, I will strike again!

The hubby.

Happy Onigiri Bento

Bento includes umeboshi onigiri, broccoli, and kanikama tamagoyaki. The pink container includes mayonnaise for the broccoli.

Sorry for the lack of updates. Been busy running around and we drove down to LA again for a Fundraiser Gala and visited Disneyland for the third time this year. We should have paid to be annual passholders -- I think this would have saved us so much money, but we had no idea we would be visiting so often this year.
